Isn’t it fascinating that some people who proclaim to be devout Christians are the first to blame God for a tragedy?
James Dobson, leader of the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, linked the tragic shooting in Sandy Hook with the state of Connecticut legalizing same-sex marriage and legal abortion in America. The Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas announced its followers would protest the funerals of some of the victims in Sandy Hook to “sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.” Why – because of legalized same-sex marriage in the state. The Rev. Sam Morris told his Tennessee Baptist church Sunday that “we get all up in arms about 20 children being shot in a day care but we don’t give one good-glory rip about the 4,000 that were removed violently from the wombs of their mothers the same day.” Morris went on the criticize public schools for teaching children evolution, sex and “how to be a homo.” Televangelist Pat Robertson has blamed disasters, like Hurricane Katrina, on the acceptance of homosexuality.
Following any horrific tragedy or disaster, there are always those who ask, “How could a loving God allow this to happen?” The answer is – “we don’t know.” But that does not mean He is not still a ‘loving’ God. Friday after the shooting in Newtown, CT I heard a priest answer the question of “How could a loving God allow this to happen?” He said, “Some questions only for God to answer.”
It is appalling that those who want to be considered respectable Christian leaders would use any tragedy to advance their agenda on issues like abortion and same-sex marriage. The religious leaders who take advantage of these horrific moments in life to rile up their followers and America into a state of hysteria should be denounced as zealot opportunists and not respected Christian leaders.
The God I know and pray to does not punish innocent children and their families. The God I know is loving and forgiving and while He expects us to follow a moral path, He would never unleash His wrath to punish innocent people.
Do you think God used a 20-year-old gunman to murder 20 innocent children, 6 school employees and a mother because Connecticut legalized same-sex marriage? Do you think God sent Hurricane Katrina to destroy the lives of so many people because of homosexuals in the French Quarter?
There must be more than one God – because that’s not the God I know.
