Scoot: Costas proved he is wrong about gun control

Last Sunday during halftime, NBC’s Bob Costas talked about the tragic murder/suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs player Jovan Belcher.  He used that moment on nationwide television to condemn American’s “gun culture.”  Costas went on to essentially blame the availability of guns in America for the tragedy.

Last night during halftime, Bob Costas talked about how the NFL was dealing with another tragedy for the second week in a row.  Costas spoke of the tragedy early Friday morning when two of the Dallas Cowboys were involved in a tragic accident.  Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent, 24, was arrested for drinking and driving and manslaughter of his teammate Jerry Brown, Jr., who was killed in the accident.

Unknowingly, Bob Costas has given us the perfect example of the irrational hysteria that surrounds gun control in America.  Last week, Costas blamed an inanimate object, a gun, for a tragedy.  This week, Costas failed to blame an inanimate object, a car, for a terrible tragedy.  In both cases, it was the decisions of humans, not inanimate objects that were to blame for the two tragedies.

A vast number of gun deaths in America can be attributed to what is labeled “gun problems,” but they can be more accurately described as a “human problems.”   It may be a cliché but it’s true – “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.”

It is fair to point out that guns make it easier to kill.  A gun allows you to kill someone without personal contact, so it takes less courage to kill another person.  We have also become a society that demands instant gratification.  This is why we constantly hear about shooting deaths resulting from an argument, road rage, revenge or just a moment of anger.  If you have a temper or tend to be easily frustrated and you own a gun, check yourself at that moment and do not be so quick to solve your dilemma with your gun.  If you do, the second amendment will not save you from prison.   Death seems to bring the instant gratification we seek without acknowledgement of the ultimate consequences.

Failing to focus on the human decision to drink and drive in the case of Brent of the Cowboys, Bob Costas aligned himself with the irrational and hysterical notion that stricter gun control laws will yield fewer deaths.  How will stricter gun control laws remove guns from the hands of those who are prone to criminal behavior?
If you have a gun for protection or hunting, then use it for that purpose only!  But to blame a gun for a murder-suicide would be similar to blaming a car for a driver’s decision to drive while intoxicated.

The decisions of humans, not inanimate objects, are to blame for the two tragedies involving players in the NFL.

I support Costas
People kill people yes but a lot of the people walking around today that shouldn't have guns !

I don't support Costas
There are a lot of people on TV that should not have microphones. There are a lot of people that have children that should be allowed to reproduce. It is the individual that makes the choice of right or wrong and therefore an individual needs to be accountable for his own actions!!

You support Costas because you are a rube
"People kill people yes but a lot of the people walking around today that shouldn't have guns" There are already laws in place to keep those people from being able to legally obtain firearms. The problem is, that like all things illegal, if someone wants something bad enough, they will get it. You can violate the rights of the law abiding citizens all you want, but the criminals will still get guns because they don't care about laws.

Yeah and
"People kill people yes but a lot of the people walking around today that shouldn't have guns !" Yeah and most of them are called cops.

I support Costas
It's really very simple. Guns kill. People want to own guns because they are hoping for an opportunity to kill someone. There is no reason why anyone should own a gun. Get rid of them all. In Europe even the cops don't carry guns. That is because they don't need them because they have control over gun sales unlike America where even a convicted murderer can legally buy a gun.

Costas is nuts
I have to laugh. This man says the most eloquent statements talking about children's games. But steps all over himself while Scapegoating guns. The more he Scapegoats the more rediclous he becomes.

Good fpr him
THE DISCUSSION OF GUN CONTROL IN AMERICA HAS A PLACE EVERYWHERE. WHY SHOULD HE BE CRITIZED FOR WHAT HE SAID. WHY SHOULD HE HAVE TO APOLOGIZE. IF YOU SAW HIM ON PIERS MORGAN HE COMMENTED OF THE CULTURE OF FOOTBALL PLAYERS IN GENERAL. HE IS ONE OF THE BESTBROADCASTERS AROUND
