Kids in the river parishes today go back to school.St. Charles Parish public schools start today, with kids in St. John the Baptist Parish beginning their first full week after getting back to business on Friday.
The St. Charles public school system just completed the second phase of a major construction project, opening new wings in the high schools in Destrehan and Hahnville.
"The whole focus in the passing of this bond issue was to eliminate portable buildings throughout our district so we're well on our way of doing that," superintendent Felicia Gomez-Walker told WWL-TV.
St. Charles also opened a kindergarten wing at Mimosa Park Elementary in Luling.
Meanwhile, school districts continue to operate as best they can while the dispute over Common Core educational standards rages in Baton Rouge between the state's department of education and Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.
"Despite what is happening in Baton Rouge and the debate in Baton Rouge, we have selected materials, we have instructional practices that will help us deliver high standards of teaching and learning to our students" Gomez-Walker said.
Some children in the New Orleans Recovery School district resume classes today. Others return a week from today.
