Saints sign guard Grubbs

Kristian@wwl.com  -  The Saints didn't take long to find a replacement for offensive lineman Carl Nicks.  The Saints have agreed to terms with Pro Bowl offensive lineman Ben Grubbs.

The deal is for 5 years with $16 million guaranteed and $36 million total.  That also includes a $10 million signing bonus.

Coming up at 4:00 p.m.:  We talk with Ben Grubbs on "Sportstalk" with Bobby Hebert and Deke Bellavia.

Grubbs spent five years with the Baltimore Ravens prior to joining the Saints. He started 10 games last season in Baltimore.

"He will prove to be an outstanding fit to our offensive line and our team both on and off the field," Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said after the deal was struck with Grubbs.

At 6'3, 310 lbs, Grubbs is considered to be the best offensive guard available after Carl Nicks.  He missed some time this past season with a toe injury, but he has started in 70 games during his NFL career and was an alternate for the Pro Bowl last year.

No ill will
I don't bear any grievances against Carl Nicks or Robert Meachem for leaving--they helped us become world champs, so why would I? Most players will never get a ring in their entire career. These guys already have it in their back pocket, so now they can play without worrying about that. Like most fans, I hate how players come in and become family to us, only to leave for one reason or another. But sometimes you open your wallet and realize you have to make a decision. Good luck to the departed players--except when they're playing the Saints, of course!

Carl had to take care of himself/family. I am good with that.

Good work Saints
It was hard losing Carl Nicks, and I wish him the best, but the Saints stepped up and found an able replacement. Welcome Ben. Get ready for a championship ring!!!
