Rex and his Queen on WWL First News

The King and Queen of Carnival granted a rare interview on WWL first news this morning.  We learned about their backgrounds and some deep family roots within the Rex organization.

Rex this year is Jack LaBorde, an engineer and a Tulane graduate, who once played football for the Green Wave.

''I'm very proud to be a member of the 1970 Liberty Bowl team, where it was Tulane's first bowl game in 30 years,'' said LaBorde.

LaBorde says in those days he played quarterback, running back or whatever they asked of him.

He followed his father in the Rex organization and so did this years Queen, Carroll Irene Gelderman.  Her mother once reigned as Queen of Carnival.

When and how did she get the news?

''It turned out they had an early Easter gift and they gave me a photo when she was queen with my face pasted on top and she told me it was my turn,'' said Gelderman.

Gelderman says '' Everyone cried and we had some champagne."

Both Rex and his Queen call it an honor and the thrill of a lifetime.
