A pitbull attack in La Rose is stirring up a life or death decision for a State District Judge.
The owners of the dog are making a plea to let their dog live despite the fact that the animal bit and seriously injured a neighbor. Jerome and Lillian Jarreau both say the dog isn't dangerous and doesn't deserve a death sentence.
The Lafourche Sheriffs office disagrees. Authorities are asking that the 95 pound dog be put to sleep.
Louisiana has a new dangerous animal law. The author of the bill, State Representative Ricky Hardy, says not only should the pitt bull be killed, but the owners should face charges of negligent injury and go to jail.
The law, which went into effect in August, calls for 6 months in jail and a $500 fine.
"Once incident is too much. You know what type of breed you have," Hardy said.
Hardy Interview:
''We all know that pitbulls are viscous animals once they have the taste of the blood in their mouths, and they can really maul and hurt a person,'' Hardy insisted.
Hardy has no sympathy and blames the owners. He says in the case of an animal causing a person's death, the fine grows to $5,000 and a year in jail.
