NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer reported today that according to a source, Saints Head Coach Sean Payton and the team are "not close" to a new deal to keep Payton in New Orleans.
"People thought this is between the Saints and Dallas," Glazer said. "If this thing doesn't get done ... (Payton) is going to open it up everywhere. He's really not going to limit his options."
As Payton continued to serve his season-long suspension, the NFL confirmed that the league had never ratified Payton's 2011 contract extension.
At issue in the contract was language that would have allowed Payton to exit the team if General Manager Mickey Loomis were to be suspended or fired.
The NFL ruled that clause in the contract was not acceptable, and Payton could be a free agent after his suspension is up.
