Saints head coach Sean Payton missed practice on Wednesday, after being released from the hospital around 11:30. Payton did return to team headquarters later in the afternoon for meetings and game planning sessions with his team and coaching staff. The rest of the Saints coaches carried on the installation of the game plan on Wednesday.
Coach Payton will still call the plays on Sunday, but it will be high above the playing field in the Coaches Booth. Saints quarterback Drew Brees said that it would be different to not be able to talk to him face to face during a game, but they’ll work everything out. Several players I talked to on Wednesday told me it was a little weird not seeing Payton donning his visor on the practice field. Other than that it was business as usual. Assistant Head Coach Joe Vitt ran practice.
Defensive Tackle Sedrick Ellis (ankle) did not practice Wednesday. Middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma also did not practice (knee). Tight end David Thomas practiced for the first time in a month since suffering a concussion in week 3. Thomas says he’s preparing to play this weekend, but still has to pass another test.
