Prime time party time in New Orleans

The Monday blues turn to cheers for the Black & Gold tonight.

New Orleans is primed to celebrate a big prime-time party in the Superdome, as the Saints host the Miami Dolphins.

"Monday Night Football is always good for the CBD," says Kurt Weigle, President & CEO of the Downtown Development District. "We know that it comes with a few challenges...a few hassles for some of the office workers headed home. But, overall, it's a great thing for downtown."

"We all deal with a few hassles for the greater good, and I think this is just another example of that," says Weigle. "All in all, with extra stays in the downtown hotels, and the restaurants and bars being full, it's great."

Some businesses may choose not to deal with the hassles, or let their employees leave early. City Hall closes this afternoon at 4 o'clock.

Not that city officials consider the prime-time exposure a hassle.

"It's a great celebration of the city, itself," Weigle says. "We know how important the Saints are to the city, especially when they're doing well, like they are this year. And, having them in town against another undefeated team...it's going to be a great party downtown."

The city, of course, lends itself to downtown parties. And the increased traffic will be noticeable, not only on the streets, but on the sidewalks...an added benefit for many businesses in the CBD.

"That's one of the many ways that we're blessed here in downtown New Orleans...having such a walkable downtown with so many restaurants and bars almost directly adjacent to the Superdome."

Weigle says it can be fun, just to watch the passing parade.

"Being downtown, sitting outside in a park and watching the people go by, is part of the joy of any great city. And, in New Orleans, I think we do that better than anywhere in America."

And, even in a city known for its big events, he says Monday Night Football is something special.

"You know, it's not just about the game. It's not just about having a good time in the bars and restaurants. But, I think...just feeling that great, positive vibe is good for the city. I can almost start to feel the electricity already."
