State Police, in cooperation with the DEA, hopes residents will use the opportunity to get expired and unused prescription meds out of their homes.
State Trooper Albert Paxton says abuse of prescription drugs is becoming a national epidemic.
"Prescription drugs are becoming a big problem when they're not disposed of properly. They might be in the medicine cabinet or someplace where children can get them or other people can get them. And, they're a hot item on the street now," says Paxton.
Police report the abuse of prescriptions ranks second only to the use of marijuana as the most common type of drug abuse.
Paxton says prescription drugs may appear innocent enough but they are quickly becoming the drug of choice by dealers.
He says it's a bad idea to dispose of drugs by throwing them away, or flushing them down the toilet, especially if there are kids in your home.
The best way to get drugs out of harm's way is to let experts dispose of them.
The drugs can be brought to any Louisiana State Police site for disposal.
