Police chief faces exasperated city council

New Orleans Police Chief Ronal Serpas found himself on the hot seat at the City Council today.

"Bottom line is we've got to see a dramatic improvement in our murder rate.  It is killing our city figuratively and literally," Councilwoman Stacy Head demanded.

The Chief said they are employing ever tactic out there.

"There is nothing that is not being done that we ain't trying," Serpas insisted.  "We are all looking for that silver bullet... we're gonna keep looking until we find it."

Head was clearly frustrated.

"We can't handle it any longer.  Y'all have been in office for long enough that we've got to start seeing a dramatic improvement."

Listen to the exchange:

She said Newark, New Jersey did it.

The chief fired back, saying that the murder rate went back up there.

"These short term solutions don't solve the long term problem."

Head responded, "Do a short term solution and a long term solution at the same time"

Serpas said,  "There is no question it's our number one priority."
