Cops say a pit bull dog killed a little girl in Houma.
"On March 25, 2014 at approximately 7:07pm Houma Police responded to Houma Highland Apt. Complex," Chief Todd Duplantis said in a news release. "Upon arrival officers learned that a large pit bull had attacked a female child inside an apartment and when the mother fought the dog off her child the dog attacked her."
Duplantis says the mom eventually pulled the child into another room. The little girl would have been 5 years old next week.
"The mother was able to get away from the pit bull and barricade herself in a bedroom," the chief explained. "She screamed for help and handed over her 5 year-old child through a window to medical personnel."
He says the wounds were bad.
"The child received facial and head injuries from the attack and was transported to Terrebonne General Medical Center," Duplantis said. "She later died from injuries sustained in the attack."
The mother was hospitalized.
"The child was identified as Mia Derouen, W/F, 4/3/09, and the mother was identified as Megan Touchet, W/F, 1/14/87," the chief wrote.
Cops killed the dog.
"Officers noticed the pit bull was running loose inside the apartment acting in a very vicious manner. In an effort to reduce further injuries, officers had to utilize lethal force to stop the threat," according to Duplantis.
No one is facing charges at this time.
"The investigation is continuing and further information will be released as it develops."
