Parish, Broussard not liable for Katrina flooding in Jefferson

Jurors in Jefferson Parish say that the parish and former Parish President Aaron Broussard are not liable for flooding damage after Hurricane Katrina.

The jury found that officials did not act with willful misconduct when they evacuated pump operators.  The panel decided that the parish was negligent in implementing the so-called "Doomsday Plan," but said that's not what caused flooding.

Plaintiffs' attorneys, however, said the jury also ruled that the floods were not an act of god.

They insisted that is inconsistent with the finding that the officials didn't cause the flooding.

So, while the ruling concludes the parish cannot be held liable; attorneys for home and business owners may ask an appeals court to review the decision.
