Northshore cops rescue puppy from hot car

Cops on the Northshore say they rescued a puppy from a very hot car.

"Slidell Police were dispatched to the parking lot of Northshore Square Mall in reference to a puppy in distress," Detective Daniel Seuzeneau said in a news release. "When police arrived, they observed a pit bull puppy, which was near death, trapped inside of a vehicle parked in the mall parking lot.  The outside temperature was around 92 degrees, the windows of the vehicle were barely cracked, and the puppy was trapped inside with no water and nearing death."

The detective says the officers decided they couldn't wait for the owners to return, so they took action.

"The decision was made to enter the vehicle and save the animal.  After entering the vehicle, the small puppy was extremely dehydrated, lethargic, and was in need of medical attention," he explained.

Seuzeneau says Animal Control came to help the dog.

"After waiting an additional thirty minutes for owner's to come back to the vehicle, 23-year-old Lajessica Mckenzie and 20-year-old Carleisha Shelly, were greeted by Slidell Police officers, and subsequently placed under arrest for Simple Cruelty to Animals.  The two girls told officers they didn't think they would be shopping for a long period of time."

They were both arrested and charged with animal cruelty.

"There is no doubt that the puppy would have died if our officer wouldn't have intervened," says Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith.  "With the temperatures being as hot as they were, the inside of the car must have exceeded over 150 degrees; even with the windows cracked.  People need to realize that leaving a child or animal inside of a vehicle during the summer can be deadly.  My officers are instructed to take any action necessary to preserve life, whether it is a child or an animal," says Chief Smith.

As of this morning, Seuzeneau said the puppy was doing well and "acting like…well a puppy!"

He says they have not determined if the two women will be allowed to have the dog back.
