Nagin associate to plead guilty to public bribes

A local businessman with ties to former New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is due in federal court later today to plea guilty to bribing a public official, widely reported to be Nagin himself. If the government is going to charge Nagin with a crime, they better do it soon.

"The noose is clearly tightening around Mr. Nagin's neck," said Loyola School of Law professor Dane Ciolino, as Rodney Williams is about to become the latest person to plea guilty to bribing "Public Official A," thought to be the former mayor.

Listen to Loyola law professor Dane Ciolino:

Ciolino says prosecutors appear to be lining up their government witnesses: former New Orleans technology chief Greg Meffert, local businessman Frank Fradella who also pleading guilty to providing cash and free granite to "Public Official A," and now Williams.  Ciolino says he and doesn't think it will be much longer before the big target is announced at federal court.

"I would expect that MR. Nagin, if he's going to be charged, and it sure looks like he will be, will be charged in the next few weeks," Ciolino predicted.

Williams' alleged bribe was to have been paid in January 2008, meaning the five-year statute of limitations for charging the bribe recipient will be up next month.
