NOPD officer suspended after video shows him not intervening in fight

New Orleans Police have suspended an officer without pay after a video posted to YouTube shows him at the scene of a fight on Canal Street, but not directly intervening.

The video, posted earlier this month, shows several people involved in a fight in the 1000-block of Canal Street. One officer can be seen taking a man from the scene, while two women continue to struggle with each other. Police say Officer Cortez Hankton stands by letting the fight continue.

The video shows Hankton speaking into his radio. At one point, a man comes up and begins throwing punches at one of the women. Hankton then intervened to move the man back.

The fight continued until two female officers arrived and separated the women.

WWL has reached out to Hankton's attorney for comment. We have not received a reply.

You can view the video below.

WARNING: The video depicts violence and contains profanity and raw language.
