Mother charged with killing disabled son in Plaquemines Parish
A woman allegedly killed her baby with alcohol, hand sanitizer and perfume.
The Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Office called a news conference today to release details in the "alcohol poising death of 2 year old Lucas Ruiz."
Police say Erika Wigstrom confessed to poisoning her baby son.
"Detectives interviewed Lucas' mother, Erika Wigstrom, 20, of 110 XI Street in Belle Chasse... During the interview, Wigstrom confessed to injecting hand sanitizer in Lucas' feeding tube prior to feeding him on January 23, 2014. Wigstrom also admitted to injecting perfume into Ruiz's feeding tube, while Lucas Ruiz was being treated at Ochsner Hospital in Jefferson on October 16, 2012," Commander Eric J. Becnel said in a news release. "Wigstrom informed investigators that she injected alcohol into Lucas' feeding tube on both occasions because she didn't want Lucas Ruiz to suffer any longer."
She faces charges of first degree murder for the death of the child who had been diagnosed with Down Syndrome.
The child died January 24th.
In October 2012, the baby's father, Cesar Ruiz, was accused of pouring rum into the child's feeding tube. Lucas Ruiz was eight months old at the time.
"Wigstrom told detectives that Cesar Ruiz was not the person that poisoned Lucas during that incident and that she in fact was the person who injected and poisoned him," Becnel said.
