More than trees are recyclable

The day after Christmas likely means a pile of extra trash at your home, and state environmental officials urge you to consider recycling as much as you can.

Wrapping paper, boxes, plastic packaging -- that's all obvious recycling fodder.  Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality spokesman Rodney Mallett says the have some other suggestions.

"Go to deq.louisiana.gov and we have recycling information there," Mallet said, including some stuff that might not be as obvious as getting rid of the wrapping material.

"There's actually companies out there that will accept your used cooking oil" that Mallet says will happily accept those gallons of used peanut oil leftover from holiday turkey-fries.  "Sometimes people will pour that down the drain or pour that in their yard when they're done with it...that's something that you can recycle and re-use."
