Miles: "We're not that far off"

Ninth ranked LSU lost by eight points to Florida, but the way the Gators dominated the Tigers in the 2nd half, it felt like the Bayou Bengals were defeated by 80 points.

LSU's offense remains the biggest problem. In the game against Florida, the Tigers were 1-of-13 on 3rd down conversions, allowed four sacks and threw for 158 yards. LSU's once dominating running game, only rushed for 42 yards.

But Coach Les Miles believes his team's problems on offense are correctable and they'll continue to address them during practice this week.

"I think we're not that far off," Miles said. "I think we're doing things we're capable of doing. We have to get there, and it takes work."

The coaches are working with quarterback Zach Mettenberger, but the results are not there. Miles was asked whether the offense would benefit if the more athletic Rob Bolden or Jerrard Randall would get a few snaps at quarterback.

"We really think Zach is that guy," Miles said. We're not so prone to discard him for a mobile quarterback. We just need to make sure we get the ball to the guy that the defense has left not as well covered. We need to catch it and advance the ball. If we do those things, we'll be fine."

But Mettenberger is not the only problem with the passing game. Wide receivers have been dropping balls or not getting open and the offensive line is struggling to protect Mettenberger or open holes in the ground game.

Miles didn't offer any concrete ways on how these two position groups will improve, only that it will take hard work during practice.
