Home security video of recent car burglaries in Old Metairie show something that the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office finds quite troubling: a suspect pointing what appears to be a handgun at homes as he and others steal from parked cars.
The crimes happened in the early morning hours of August 10, in the 100-300 blocks of Labarre Road, and the 100-300 blocks of Metairie Lawn Drive. Col. John Fortunato with the sheriff's office says the thefts appear to be the "pulling handles" type of car burglary: thieves, four of them, checking for unlocked cars. But Fortunato says one disturbing fact stood out.
"One of the suspects is brandishing what appears to be a semi-automatic type handgun...and actually points the weapon at the door of the home," Fortunato said. "If anyone should come across a situation like this, and their alarm system or their video systems alert them to movement, do not go outside."
Col. John Fortunato says they don't want to think about what might happen if a homeowner gets into a confrontation with these men. He says if a security system trips a driveway alarm, residents should call 911 and wait for the authorities.
