Man shot in leg after confronting alleged car burglar

A man who was walking his dog early this morning was shot in the leg in the Uptown area.

It happened on Soniat Street near South Liberty.

Tom Hayne was out walking his dog before 6 am when he saw a suspect trying to break into cars in the neighborhood.  Hayne confronted the person and the suspect allegedly pulled out a gun and shot Hayne.  The bullet went through Hayne's leg.

"What I should have done is called 911," Hayne told WWL TV.  "It's jus a little against my nature not to confront something that's wrong, but I think it's something that's best left up to the police force."

The bullet went through his leg.

"I'm just thankful that the worst part of it was my wife worrying and the IV shots in my arms at the hospital," Hayne said.

Police continue to search for the suspect.
