Makeover kicks into high gear at closed Smoothie King Center

Crews today are closing the Smoothie King Center.  Construction will now move into high gear to change the look of the building.

"We will be closing the building for approximately two months to complete the renovation work," General Manager Alan Freeman explained.

"Smoothie King center work is progressing very, very well," Construction Manager Pat Tobler said.  "It's really taking shape with the sports bar balcony, the ticket overhang and the whole new lobby area."

He says you will see a considerable amount of change between now and the first of October.

In addition to adding thousands of feet of new space, crews are also changing the color of the building and adding LED lights like the ones on the Superdome that can be adjusted to create any color scheme.

Last night's Justin Timberlake show was the last one on the facility until October.

"We will be reopen with Katie Perry on October the eighth, and then Paul McCartney is schedule to play on October the 11th," according to Freeman. "We're going to be adding a lot of space with that lobby, a lot more entry doors and ticket windows."

This is the second phase of a $50 million improvement project that was part of the new lease with the New Orleans Pelicans.
