At the plate: LSU scored 24 runs in its previous two games, but they struggled to push runners across the plate on Friday night. The Tigers scored two runs on a Mason Katz double over the right fielder’s head in the 1st inning. But LSU would not score again until the 8th inning. Alex Bregman tied the game at three, with a single to score pinch runner Andrew Stevenson. Ibarra ended the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.
LSU had plenty of chances to put this game away, but they left 15 runners on base. In the 5th and 6th innings, LSU’s first two hitters reached base, but did not score.
At the plate: LSU’s inability to score runs earlier in the game, spoiled a great effort by sophomore pitcher Aaron Nola, who struck out a career-high 11 hitters. Nola allowed three hits and one unearned run in seven innings. His ERA is now 1.83.
LSU used four pitchers in the 8th inning, which is when the Bears scored two runs to take the lead. Nick Rumbelow and Brent Bonvillain were charged with giving up one run. Chris Cotton is the winning pitcher, as he struck out two of the five hitters he faced.
Up next: The 8-and-1 Tigers host Brown at 6:30 on Saturday night. Ryan Eades will start on the mound. Eades is coming off a strong performance against Southeastern Louisiana last Sunday. Coach Paul Mainieri wants to see a better performance, but his team will be battling the elements. The temperature is expected to be around 45-degrees when the first pitch is thrown.
