Kristian's Saints update: Roby Signs, Nnamdi dines

Kristian@wwl.com

Courtney Roby:  The Saints will have their special teams captain back in the mix for at least one more year.  Wide receiver Courtney Roby has agreed to terms on a 1-year deal with the Saints.  Roby had hoped for something long-term, but decided to take the 1 year deal with the Saints.

Roby did receive some attention from the Cowboys and Giants during free agency.

Nnamdi sighting:  Free agent corner back Nnamdi Asomugha was in New Orleans over the weekend, visiting with the Saints about possibility reuniting with Rob Ryan.

Asomugha played uner Ryan in Oakland, when he was the defensive coordinator for the silver and black.  The 31-year-old corner was released by the Eagles on Tuesday and visited with the 49ers last week.

If the Saints reach a deal with Asomugha, it likely means the end for one of two cornerbacks currently on the roster, Patrick Robinson or Jabari Greer.  Robinson makes more sense to part ways with.

IF we sign Asomugha...
I would hate to see us let go of either Robinson OR Greer. While Greer has a huge salary and his skills are on the decline, his strength is definitely in the type of man to man coverage that Ryan runs. While Robinson seems to struggle in man to man, he is a VERY inexperienced 1st round draft pick who will improve with time - I don't think there would be much of a cap benefit in letting him go without seeing how much improvement he makes under Ryan. Greer would save us about $4million or so. I think we keep them both - at least until after the draft plays out.

It Will Be Interesting to See How This Plays Out...
Jabari Greer isn't getting any younger, but Patrick Robinson really hasn't shown me yet that he was a worthy 1st round pick. If we could land Asomugha, I have no doubt that Rob Ryan could be his redemption, so to speak. Regardless of whether we get Nnamdi or not, Keenan Lewis will definitely be an upgrade from our secondary from last season. Cornerback wasn't addressed early enough in last year's draft, and we still need to find a way to ship Roman Harper out of town. He's too costly and ineffective.

NO BRAINER!!!
Does any one remember our defense last year i say part ways with Robinson then release Greer to free cap space to get someone like finnigin from Tennessee

Finnegan Plays For The Rams, Not Titans...Do Your Research
While your point is valid, never hurts to do a little research before you post. Loomis and Payton will figure out a way to improve our defense. We'll see just who makes the cut this year.

Coverage & Pressure Go Hand and Hand
Great coverage would allow Saints to Finally pressure opposing QB's consisently.
