Kristian: Not too surprised over Jo-Lonn's exit

Free agent linebacker Jo-Lonn Dunbar today announced that he's heading to St. Louis.  I think we kind of saw this coming, with the signing of Curtis Lofton.  Although we're losing a starter, I'm not too worried.  The Saints obviously already had a plan in place with the signing of Lofton and Chris Chamberlain. And, don't forget, they've got last year's 3rd-round draft pick Martez Wilson, who took on a bigger role in the latter half of the 2011 season.

Any concerns?  Well, what we're losing with Dunbar going to the Rams is the depth at middle linebacker, in terms of backing up Vilma.  If Vilma gets suspended under "Bounty Gate," you'll have Lofton...but then, who's going to back up lofton?

Overall, though, I'm not particularly surprised. I'm guessing that before Gregg Williams got suspended, he told Jeff Fisher that Jo-Lonn is a player that he should go after.

Fans shouldn't get too worked up over this as some kind of by-product of the distractions of "Bounty Gate."  I mean, I'm not trying to downplay the significance of Dunbar, but these things happen.  You're going to get some turnover, and in this case, the Saints decided to pay Lofton over Jo-Lonn Dunbar.

Dunbar has been a quality backup guy and a contributor on special teams. His versatility at all three linebacker positions is what made him so valuable under Gregg Williams...But Steve Spagnuolo may be looking for a different kind of player.

Exchange
Could the Saints be exchanging players non suspended for suspended players looking forward to the season. Many Saints players may not be playing, bring in new players with no expected suspension.
