Kentwood Police Chief indicted in missing cash case

The Kentwood Chief of Police is under indictment, accused of "tampering" with thousands of dollars recovered in a burglary investigation.

Louisiana Attorney General issued a press release Friday afternoon announcing the indictment of 59-year-old police chief Gregory Newton.

Newton was indicted Friday by a Tangipahoa Parish Grand Jury on a felony count of malfeasance in office and a felony count of unauthorized use of a movable, according to Caldwell's office.

Prosecutors say count carries a prison sentence of up to five years and a fine of up to $5,000.

According to the Attorney General, state police began investigating the department after a resident complained that about $2,000 in cash recovered from a burglary had been "misappropriated" by the Kentwood Police Department.

The police chief was the sole guardian of the recovered cash, according to the indictment.

The state attorney general's office took over the case after the parish district attorney recused his office from the case.
