Judge may be sympathetic to Saints' Vilma, but law may not
Chris Miller Reporting
Suspended Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma returned to federal court today for a hearing in his case against the NFL, arguing the process the league is using to punish players in the so-called "bounty" program is unfair. The judge presiding over the case, Ginger Berrigan, said during the hearing she's inclined to sympathize with that sentiment, but she also said she's not sure the law will allow her to rule in his favor.
Surrounded by Saints fans and accompanied by quarterback Drew Brees, Vilma left the courthouse after saying he was encouraged at what he heard.
"I thought today went as smoothly as it go. I didn't come in with any expectations. I was obviously hoping for ruling, but you know the judge is going to do what she has to do, she's going to make the right decision, and for me, I was excited. It went well," Vilma said. "That's all I could ask for."
Listen to Jonathan Vilma:
Vilma declined to address reports earlier in the week that the league offered to settle, proposing to reduce his season-long suspension to eight games.
"That, right now, I'm really not allowed to talk about," Vilma stated. "Which was surprising on Sunday or Monday, when it was leaked, that it was public so that right there I'm really not allowed to discuss."
As Vilma spoke to reporters assembled outside the federal courthouse in downtown New Orleans, quarterback Drew Brees arrived to offer moral support to his fellow team captain.
"I think that certainly we've made a strong case. Jonathan Vilma's made a strong case, certainly his attorney and his entire team," Brees said. "I'm here, really, on behalf of our entire team, the New Orleans Saints organization, to support Jonathan Vilma."
Listen to Drew Brees:
Vilma said he wasn't expecting Brees to be there today, but maybe he should have.
"Very surprised, but you know, it's not out of character for Drew and for the Saints," said Vilma. "We're with each other through thick and thin, and having Drew here just really emphasizes that, reiterates that. You know, I could never be more proud of Drew, the Saints organization and what we stand for."

We don't know the numbers, but he took a pay cut, and they added a year to his contract. I'm told the new deal has less guaranteed money.
