From the time he was dazzling all as a Purple Knight to his success as a player and coach at the highest level, New Orleans’ own Avery Johnson represents the Big Easy loud and proud. “It’s an exciting time here in New Orleans. This All-Star Weekend will be something that everyone can come out and enjoy,” he said.
Avery joined me and Bobby this week on Sports Talk to talk about him being an Ambassador for New Orleans during this NBA All-Star Weekend. Avery became a great player at the high school level with St. Augustine before going on to have an outstanding career for the Southern University Jaguars.

Avery won an NBA Title with the San Antonio Spurs back in 1999, and Johnson had his #6 Spurs Jersey retired as well. Johnson would go on to coach in the NBA where he led the Dallas Mavericks to the Finals in 2006, marking the first time that Dallas made a trip to the league Finals.
Johnson talked to us about how excited and honored he is to represent New Orleans, and Bobby and I snuck in a few questions to Avery about the current state of the league. So we asked someone that would know as good as anyone if he had to start a team today in the league which player would he choose to start his team with.
“I’d take LeBron,” Avery said. We then asked Avery to select between LeBron James and Kevin Durant. “LeBron is currently the best player in the game today. He has been to the Finals for three straight years, he’s won back to back titles and he’s playing well.”
Johnson said that Kevin Durant is having a great year and that either player would be great to start a team with.
