The case involving a child killer from Mansfield has caught the attention of the Catholic Church.
The Louisiana Conference of Catholic Bishops asked the governor to stop the execution, calling the Ash Wednesday date an "unnecessary tragic irony."
Rob Tasman, the Associate Director of the bishops group says they would still be opposed to the execution whether it fell on the start of lent or not, however he says it's inconsistent with the lenten call for reconciliation to kill a man on Ash Wednesday.
Sepulvado was sentenced to die in 1993 for starving his 6-year-old stepson, Welsey Allen Mercer, hitting him in the head with a screwdriver, then finally killing him in scalding water.
Tasman says Sepulvado, who is now 69 years old, is remorseful and has truly embraced his Christianity.
