Governor Bobby Jindal has sent a letter to LSU officials asking that a statue of Pistol Pete Maravich be erected in front of the PMAC on campus. Jindal says this would be an appropriate way to memorialize such a significant figure in LSU and Louisiana history. Tiger Rag Editor Luke Johnson doesn't see this happening.
"It's just a request, there's no plan," Johnson said. "There's been no answer as to how they are going to fund it. The Shaq statue cost $70,000. Who is going to pay the money to commission a Pete Maravich statue?"
Jindal did not mention in the letter how the statue could be paid for but made it clear he wanted the process to start moving forward.
Maravich still ranks as the leading NCAA Division I scorer with 3,667 points.
Johnson says Pistol Pete certainly deserves a statue.
"But I don't think this is what's going to spur them into action," Johnson said.
Maravich is not in the LSU Hall of Fame because he didn't graduate which is quite controversial. He averaged 44.2 points per game in college and Johnson says it's crazy how much Pistol Pete dominated basketball.
"And really outside of the building that's named after him which is a huge honor," says Johnson. "There is really no other sort of reverence for Pete Maravich on that campus."
