Ironman triathlete killed in New Orleans East accident

Two triathletes scheduled to participate in this weekend's Ironman event in New Orleans were struck by a car while riding their bikes this morning on Chef Menteur.

One of the athletes, a 36-year-old man, was killed, while another 40-year-old rider was in critical condition.

New Orleans police are investigating the incident that occurred around 10:15 a.m. on the eastbound side of Chef Menteur Highway (U.S. Highway 90).

According to police, the driver of a white Chevy Cruze was travelling in the right lane eastbound on Chef Menteur when, for reasons unknown, he rear ended the two cyclists who were also travelling eastbound. One cyclist was pronounced dead on the scene while the other cyclist was transported to the hospital.

This investigation is still ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time.
