Ida headed for Gulf Coast landfall as a hurricane

Ida is forecast to hit the U.S. Gulf Coast on Tuesday morning as a hurricane.  It grew to a category two hurricane Sunday, but is expected to weaken to a category one again over colder Gulf waters.

The National Hurricane Center says, "The hurricane is expected to remain a category one hurricane as it approaches coastal Southeast Louisiana and coastal Mississippi late tonight and Monday."

The official forecast track anticipates Ida swiping very close to the coast of Jefferson, Plaquemines and St. Bernard Parishes before turning toward the Alabama coast and making landfall near Mobile.

The cone of error for landfall, however, includes the Louisiana coast all the way to Florida's Big Bend area.

The National Weather Service office in Slidell says, "The main threats from hurricane Ida will include heavy rainfall...strong winds...storm surge along the coast and tidal lakes. It is too early to provide exact wind and surge forecast values for specific locations. A general concern should be for the possibility of some damage somewhere within Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi."
