House overrun with cats and dogs, child removed

Police in Thibodaux have arrested a woman after allegedly finding she and her daughter were living in filth with dozens of cats and several dogs.

Police Spokesman David Melancon says the urine and feces smell of the animals permeated everything in the house.

He says they were called to visit the home because the daughter had quit going to school after she was bullied.  He says students teased her because she smelled of animal waste.

Melancon says 3 dogs, 14 adult cats and 18 kittens were found in the home, and they were relieving themselves everywhere.

He says officers found animal feces in the child's bed.

Lorencia Raffray (right) was charged with cruelty to a juvenile and cruelty to animals.

Investigators say the 45-year-old mother told officers only a few of the animals were hers, while the rest were pets that had been abandoned by others.

The child has been placed with relatives. Raffray has been released on bond, and the animals are up for adoption.
