Houma PD: Suspect in high-speed chase had children in car

Houma Police investigators say two men are in jail after endangering the lives of two small children during a police chase.

According to Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis, an officer was patrolling an area of East street late last night when he noticed a 2005 Nissan Altima stopped in the middle of the road.

When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, Duplantis says the car took off, leading the officer on a high-speed chase through several neighborhoods.

The officer reported seeing "several items being thrown from the Nissan to include a handgun, Halloween mask, and gloves."

The driver of the Nissan, Jeremy Sims, then crashed into a curb and stopped and was quickly apprehended, according to Duplantis.  Police say the passenger, Darreka Boykin, had several outstanding warrants on traffic and drug violations.

In the back seat, police found the 2-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son of the passenger.  Officers say the children were OK after the ordeal and were released to family members.

Chief Duplantis says Boykins was arrested for the outstanding warrants and child desertion (hazardous conditions). Sims (the driver) was charged with "aggravated flight, possession of a stolen firearm, obstruction of justice, stop/ standing in roadway, possession of firearm by convicted felon, contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile, and a warrant for contempt of court."
