Hammond man fatally shot in hunting accident

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is investigating a hunting fatality in Tangipahoa Parish.

The victim is identified as 33-year-old Joseph H. Stevens, Jr., of Hammond.

DWF agents and Tangipahoa Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call Friday afternoon about a fatal shooting on property near the 55000 block of Highway 1062 in Loranger, La.

According to DWF, two people were returning from hunting when they crossed paths with Stevens at a wire fence. One of the hunters had a rifle slung over their shoulder. As they squatted down to go under some bushes, the rifle went off and a bullet struck Stevens.

Investigators believe that Stevens was killed instantly, and do not suspect foul play.

The Tangipahoa Coroner will conduct an autopsy.
