Geller: Hungry Tigers look to feast on Owls

We are in store for some top notch baseball in Louisiana as LSU hosts Rice in the Super Regional at Alex Box Stadium this weekend.  The team that takes two out of three games earns a spot in this year’s College World Series.

It’s the sixth time that the Tigers and Owls will meet in a Regional or Super Regional, and Rice is a perfect 6-0 against LSU.  So, what will be different in this year’s matchup?  Can LSU solve Rice’s riddle?

Tiger skipper Paul Mainieri is the difference.  The always positive leader sees it as they are 3-0 against the Owls.  LSU Pitching Coach David Grewe beat Rice while he was head coach at Michigan State and Mainieri has two wins against them.  One victory came while he was coaching at Notre Dame, and the other was -of course- last year in the College World Series.

LSU fans will always remember the dramatic 6-5, come from behind victory in the bottom of the ninth.

After the game Mainieri asked his ballclub, “Will you ever, EVER, give up in anything in your life again after seeing this?”  The Tiger team roared back: “No chance.”

The Owls are sure to carry that chip on their shoulders and will seek revenge for blowing a game they looked to have wrapped up.  As for LSU, they are just looking to punch that ticket to Omaha so that they can take care of some unfinished business.

The Bayou Bengals are as humble as their coach and have confidence in each other to get the job done. They are well aware of the challenge that Rice presents, but Coach Mainieri has pulled all the right strings so far.  That Midas touch has earned the confidence and respect of the fans as well as his players.
