Former Orleans school superintendent Anthony Amato dies
Anthony Amato, Head of School for the International High School of New Orleans and former superintendent for Orleans Parish Public Schools, has died.
“Anthony Amato passed away early Monday morning, December 2, 2013,” read a news release from IHSNO.
Amato served as the superintendent of Orleans Parish Public Schools from 2003 to 2005, in an often-tumultuous effort to reform the plagued system. He survived one attempt at removing him from his job when a couple of supporters on the board obtained a federal court order to protect him from being fired. But the contentious relationship with other board members continued, and Amato eventually agreed to resign. Months later, Hurricane Katrina would hit the region and change many aspects of education in the city.
Amato was 66. He is survived by his wife and seven children.
