Forecast: Disturbed area heading for Florida

An area of broad low pressure is moving through the southern Gulf of Mexico and the western parts of the Caribbean has the attention of forecasters.

"It's going to be pushing up into Florida," said WWL TV Meteorologist Laura Buchtel. "It looks like it the heaviest rain will be Miami to Orlando to Jacksonville, then into the Carolinas."

She says the disturbed weather will drift toward Florida through the end of the week, but should not impact the weather in the New Orleans area.

"The tropical moisture is staying east of us," Buchtel explained.

The National Hurricane Center calls it a "weak area of low pressure" and gives it a 30 percent chance of developing into a tropical depression.
