Food fests fill the weekend in metro New Orleans

It's another great festival weekend in metro New Orleans.

And, as always, food takes center stage at any southeast Louisiana celebration.

The Louisiana Crawfish Festival is underway, now through Sunday in Chalmette,

"We got everything crawfish," says festival chairman Cisco Gonzales. "Crawfish pies, crawfish bread, crawfish etouffee...we got everything crawfish you can imagine, even on shirts, hats and aprons."

And, he's being modest. The menu includes at least 18 different crawfish dishes.

Gonzales says they'll boil up about 30,000 pounds of mudbugs before they close Sunday night.

Also starting tonight, Hogs for the Cause has 80 teams competing for the title of 'Louisiana pork champion.'

"It's pork only, hence the 'Hogs'," says co-founder Becker Hall. "We have four categories...ribs, whole hog, pork butt/shoulder (essentially pulled pork), and our creative category, where the guys really get to flex their muscles, is 'pork-pouri'...anything that is pork."

"Friday night, we've added a gala dinner. Some of the best chefs in the southeast coming in to cook a whole animal feast," says Hall.

The hog-fest continues Saturday, 11 a.m to 11 p.m., with eight bands and plenty of pig.

And, lots of beverages to wash it all down. "We call them hogtails," says Hall. "...since cocktails are for chickens."

Of course, there'll be beer. As Hall explains, 'Beer flies when pigs die."

Saturday and Sunday, explore the Food Fest in the French Market.

"We have over 30 food vendors from all over the U.S. and Louisiana," says producer Dottie Velletto.

"Prejean's famous pheasant gumbo that you can usually only get at JazzFest...things from North Carolina, Texas, Tucson tamales, turtle chocolates from Oregon and custard from New York."

The Food Fest, basically, features great regional eats found along highways, in small towns and in city neighborhoods...non-franchised, sleeves-up food made by cooks, bakers, pit masters, and sandwich-makers who are America's culinary folk artists.

The Food Fest in the French Market is Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For non-foodies, there's also the 27th annual Tennessee Williams Literary Festival in the French Quarter, underway now through Sunday.

Sunday also features the Irish - Italian Parade along Veterans Blvd. in Metairie.
