First Carnival parades roll Saturday night in New Orleans

Krewe du Vieux's annual Mardi Gras parade goes through the Marigny and French Quarter Saturday Night in New Orleans, followed by Krewe Delusion.

They kick off Carnival season in the city.

Although, Mardi Gras Guide publisher Arthur Hardy says they're not truly Mardi Gras parades.

"Krewe du Vieux and Krewe Delusion, which follows it Saturday night, are the first parades. And the reason they're able to go through the French Quarter and have some, kind of, naughty themes is that, technically, they're not considered Mardi Gras parades and that's how they get away with it."

Hardy says, officially, Mardi Gras parades have to be held within 12 days of Fat Tuesday. These are just a bit early...and very adult.

Also in Slidell the walking Krewe of Mona Lisa and Moonpie take to the streets at 7 Saturday night.

"Mona Lisa and Moonpie are one of the craziest walking clubs in the area, and they travel through Olde Towne Slidell. Their theme is 'Magical History Tour' and this is a fun group not to be missed," says Hardy.

On Sunday, the Krewe of Little Rascals rolls at noon on the traditional Veterans Memorial Boulevard route, without the Severn and Bonnabel loops. The children's krewe parades with 19 floats depicting the theme "Explore the Middle Ages."

The Mystic Krewe of Perseus parades in Slidell on Sunday at 1 o'clock on the standard Slidell route. "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere" is the theme of the krewe's 15-float procession. Throws include crab beads and hand-decorated plastic crabs.

And, the Pearl River Lions Club holds its parade Sunday at 1 p.m.in  Pearl River.
