Fighting Tigers trounce Kent State 45-13
How it happened: Quarterback Zach Mettenberger threw for 264 yards and three touchdowns and Jeremy Hill rushed for 117 yards and two scores as the Tigers easily defeated Kent State 45-13 in the final tune-up before SEC play.
Offense: Mettenberger continues to make all the throws. He completed 13 of 18 for 264 yards and three touchdowns. Odell Beckham and Jarvis Landry once again led the team in catches. Beckham had five grabs for 76 yards and one touchdown, Landry had four catches for 66 yards and two TDs, including one leaping grab in the end zone with two defenders nearby.
Jeremy Hill got the start and gave the Tigers running game a shot in the arm. LSU averaged 4.3 yards a carry going into the game, but averaged over eight yards a carry on Saturday night. Hill had 11 rushes for 117 yards and two TDs. He did all of that in the 1st half.
Terrence Magee also eclipsed the 100-yard mark. Magee had 9 carries in the 2nd half for 108 yards and a touchdown.
Defense: LSU’s starting defensive tackles, Ego Ferguson and Anthony Johnson each had their best games of the season. Ferguson led LSU in tackles with eight and also had a sack. Johnson was credited with a 1.5 tackles for a loss and a quarterback hurry.
Micah Eugene started for an injured Craig Loston and had six tackles. Tre’Davious White started ahead of Jalen Collins at cornerback, and had four tackles including one for a loss and a forced fumble.
Special teams: Not a great night for the special teams. Travin Dural fumbled a punt that led to three points for Kent State. Jamie Keehn’s lone punt went for just 33 yards.
Flags: This was a tough game to watch as LSU was penalized 11 times for 86 yards, while Kent State was flagged 10 times for 90 yards.
Up next: LSU will host Auburn on September 21st at 6:45.
