Feds say no mercy for Nagin

Ray Nagin is scheduled for sentencing a week from today, and now prosecutors are on record about how they want the federal judge to deal with the former New Orleans Mayor.

The U.S. Attorney's office is holding a firm line. They say Nagin has shown no remorse for his crimes and lies to investigators.

Legal analyst Chick Foret agrees.

''We have no sign of any acceptance of responsibility by Ray Nagin, and we have not seen any remorse on his part,'' said Foret.

Nagin's camp spearheaded a large letter writing campaign, which even included clergy and community leaders, all pleading for leniency for Nagin.  They said anything above 20 years would be in effect a death sentence for the 58 year old.

Chick Foret-Interview:

Foret says in his opinion, Judge Ginger Berrigan will lean to the lower end of the sentencing guidelines.

''If I had to guess a week out what the sentence will be, it will be somewhere in the area of 15 years,'' Foret said.

In a court brief, prosecutors said Nagin should do every day of a 20-year sentence.

Nagin's sentencing is scheduled for July 9.
