Edwards expected to announce Congressional candidacy today

Sources tell the WWL State Capital Bureau that today at the Press Club of Baton Rouge, convicted former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards will announce he's decided to run for the 6th Congressional District.

Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says this move is pretty shocking considering we all thought the 86-year-old would come home and relax after his prison term.

"You'd think he'd want to sit back and enjoy his status as the only Governor who was elected to the office of Governor 4 times," Pinsonat said. "Like most people I'm surprised by this."

Pinsonat says The Cajun Prince is still extremely popular in Louisiana, but he doesn't think there are enough Edwards lovers to elect him to Congress.

However, Pinsonat says we're talking about a man who is the only Governor in Louisiana to be elected 4 times.

"But now he's running and the state has changed a lot since he was last elected Governor," Pinsonat says. "We don't elect any Democrats, but the main problem here is that he was sent to federal prison and convicted of a felony. But it's Edwin Edwards so you never know."

Pinsonat says the 6th District includes all of Baton Rouge where Edwards has never been popular.

He says Edwards will have to give a good explanation to voters on why he is taking this step.

"I guess we'll get a chance to hear his reasoning when he announces. He will have to go back and revisit his conviction," Pinsonat says. "The 6th District Congressional election will probably get more attention than the United States Senate race."
