OK, round one of the LHSAA state playoffs is in the books, and now it’s on to the regional round. The number of teams still alive in each of the five classes has shrunk to 16, and that number will be reduced to eight after this weekend.
And for those of us who just can’t help but look ahead, there could be some huge local match-up in the state quarterfinals if the right things fall into place. Hint, hint: Karr and St. Aug in round three!!!! I’m just saying. Let’s take a look at our match-up between Kentwood and Country Day and other big games in round two of the playoffs.
Who is Country Day?
School Location: Old Metairie, Louisiana
School Mascot: Cajuns
School Colors: red and blue
Head Coach: Richard Wood
The Country Day Cajuns are coming into the second round of the Class 1A playoffs on a hot streak. Not many teams in the state are riding a eight-game win streak.
The Cajuns bring to Kentwood a 10-1 record with just one loss this season. The Cajuns' lone loss of the season came way back in the third week of the season when they suffered a 38-10 setback to the Episcopal Knights.
Country Day finished the regular season with a 9-1 overall record, which included a perfect 4-0 mark in district 10-1A play. The Cajuns have scored a total of 403 points this season and they have allowed only 163 points.
Country Day averages 37 points scored per game while they allow only 15 points on average. The Cajuns average margin of victory this season is 22 points per game.
Last week the Cajuns defeated #21 St. Edmund 37-13 to advance to the state regional round of the Class 1A playoffs. The Cajuns are the #12 seed this post season.
Who is Kentwood?
School Location: Kentwood, Louisiana
School Colors: Royal Blue and Orange
Head Coach: David Currier
The Kentwood Kangaroos are one of the most storied and successful football programs in Louisiana. With seven state titles to their credit, Kentwood clearly measures their success by the ultimate goal, and that is winning the state title.
Kentwood has long been a power in lower classification football in Louisiana, and this season the 'Roos have one of the best teams they have had in quite a while. Led by the largest freshman class in school history, the 'Roos should be a legit title contender for the next four seasons.
Kentwood blew through the regular season with an impressive 8-1 mark, with their lone loss coming at the hands of the 4th seeded team in Class 3A Loranger. The 'Roos have been blowing their opponents out for most of the season.
Kentwood has scored 371 points this season for an average of 37.1 points scored per game, while the 'Roos' stout defense is allowing only 11 points per contest. Kentwood’s Defense has been playing their best football of the season as in their last seven games the Roos have allowed just 45 points and posted three shutouts in that span as well.
Kentwood had no problem with their first round opponent last week with 54-0 win over Houma Christian. Kentwood scored 27 points in the second and third quarters of that game to blowout their first playoff foe.
The winner of the match-up takes on the winner of the #13 Basile versus #29 Louisiana New Tech Plain Dealing. If the 'Roos win they would have to travel in the quarter finals regardless of who wins between Basile and La. New Tech.
