Deke's down time!

(This is kind of like a diary of a man that loves football as I attempt to give you part of my day off.  So here goes!)

I took off Friday to have a haital hernia fixed.  Dr. Lavin took good care of me and I asked him to tighten up my sleeve as well.  After surgery I was back in my room bout 12:45PM.  The folks over at Crescent City Surgical Center right off Causeway Boulevard took great care of me.  A special salute goes out to my nurse Chad and the entire staff over there.  When the meds began to fade Chad and I talked prep football, as he is a former Holy Cross Tiger.
I grabbed my cell phone to start to text Mamma D, Emile (Unc) Gauchet and the talented Todd Menessess.  I wanted to make sure that I had everything taken care of for the weekend from our prep coverage to the Saints.

Todd kindly hosted the prep show along with Allen for me Friday night as the Mandeville Skippers got a big win over the Bulldogs of Fontainebleau.  Todd could have done the entire show in his Deke Voice and not many would have not known if I was not doing the show.
I checked out the hospital about 7:30PM and went over to my home away from home the Hampton Inn in Elmwood.  Those ladies over there take great care of me and they make me feel like I’m at home.

I listened to the entire prep show and came to realize how great of a show it is.  Now I’m not talking about me, but it’s the reporters, the sounds I heard in the background and our in studio crew that make the show click every week.

The Cards beat the Rangers in the Fall Classic to win their 11th World Series as I was typing up this week’s prep football schedule, and as I picked the O.P. Walker versus Edna Karr game as the prep location for week ten of the All-State Sugar Bowl Prep Football Round –Up.

The pain medicine eventually knocked me out, and I rose up about 6:40AM Saturday and did three print pieces for our site.  Getting ready for the biggest game in years requires a lot of research, and it’s good sometimes to just put the computer down and read.  The good old fashion way to learn is still the best way.

So I wrap up four pieces for the web and then begin to break down some sound for our LSU vs.  Alabama features titled “The Brawl For it All.”  Catchy title, huh?  Richelle makes herself some coffee and then we get on the road to come back to Amite.  We swung into Rouses and got me some popsicles and Bisque to slurp on the rest of the day.  It’s Halloween so we got some things to make some cupcakes with the girls on this rare Saturday afternoon with not much to do.

I arrive at the house about 10:15AM and then my little Rudy (Emma Claire) is so excited to see her poppa while my other little youngster miss Ju-Ju Jackie Claire is getting her morning nap on.  I look at the clock and see it’s almost 11AM, and I have to get prepared if I am going to take advantage of watching as much football as possible.

I went into my closet and got some of my favorite lounging threads.  My lazy Saturday Outfit consists of an old beat up Polo shirt, my Platinum Fubu Sweater (you know, the one with Fat Albert, Rudy and Dumb Donald on the front.)  I have on my under pants, which are the heavy Rocky Balboa-like Everlast grey sweat pants with my even bigger Adidas lounge pants on top.  After all, it’s a chilly morning with a nice breeze, and I want to make sure that this outfit is comfortable enough to stay on my big lazy body all day long!  Rudy is playing with her Halloween candy while Jackie is still sleeping.
My next job was to change the batteries in the remote, grab one of my small notebooks and get one good pen and a highlighter to jot down these very same notes that I am currently re-hashing to you.

The 11AM Games included Michigan State @ Nebraska on ESPN, Texas A&M and Missouri, Duke and Virginia Tech, Florida State and NC State, Northwestern and Indiana, Colgate and Lehigh, Arkansas and Vanderbilt and Michigan was entertaining Drew Brees U at the Big House!

The Vandy vs. Arkansas Game was by far the best of the early games I could watch.  Vanderbilt is a fun team to watch.  Man they are physical and there coach is salty.  James Franklin is an energetic coach, and his new-look Doors are not a bad team at all!

Former Amite Warrior Brandon Mitchell gets the Hogs their first score of the game.  The battle between the Doors and Hogs was the best game going, along with the SEC/Big 12 game that has Missouri and Texas A&M tied up at 31-31 with 1:53 left in the game.

On the other channel Arkansas has just hit a field goal in the game to take a slim 31-28 lead over the Commodores.  If the Vandy DB’s would have been able to catch the ball they would have had at least four picks in the game.

If I ever build my own room it will be laid out with just two big comfortable pieces of furniture and about four big-screen TV’s.  I don’t like the picture-in-picture stuff.  I’d rather flip all day long!
Arkansas hangs on for a win over Vandy, Missouri knocks off Texas A&M in a Big Twelve battle between SEC Teams, Virginia Tech snuck past Duke Michigan handle Purdue behind the running of a great football name in the Wolverines Fitzgerald Toussiant, Northwestern nearly scored sixty in their win over Indiana, Florida State rolled up NC State, Lehigh crushed Colgate, and the Cornhuskers shuck the Spartans of East Lansing.

All of that…and now it’s time for the 2:30 Games.  I finally get a chance to watch the Cowboys from OSU and they romped over Baylor, as did their rival Oklahoma as the Sooners bounced back with a big win over Kansas State.

Notre Dame and Navy are on NBC, Iowa and Minnesota are on the Big Ten Network, Air Force crushed New Mexico on the Mountain West Network and the world’s largest cocktail party got underway with the Gators and Bulldogs.

Man, all of this watching made me tired.  I tried to keep from taking a nap so I switched over to Channel 38 twatch the Friday Night Football replay.  There is not another prep show in the country that can compare to FNF.  None!  JT and Ed are the best!

I told Richelle I needed a nap.  I laid my head down at 3:45PM and then woke up at 5:20…Damn, that was a long ass nap!  Good thing we got a DVR.  As I rise from my deep sleep I smell fresh cupcakes that the three lovely ladies of my life had made.

Although I could not partake in the sweet treats, the girls did a great job of making the cup cakes.  I sip on a little more bisque from Rouses and assume my position on the big red leather couch in my house.

UGA outlasts Florida 24-20, and the Lions beat Illinois 10-7.  Joe Pa wins #409 as an Illinois field goal hits the upright!  Now, it’s time for the 6 and 7pm games to get started.  It’s kind of like two-a-days if you are going to watch college football.  One Saturday should be considered a marathon and not a sprint so you certainly have to pace yourself.

I’ve got a fresh pen, blue high lighter, and get ready for the final wave of games of the day.  SEC battles on TV included Auburn blowing out Ole Miss, and South Cacka Lacka nipping the Tennessee Vols.

On upset alert - watch as Clemson falls from the ranks of the unbeatens, as does Kansas State earlier in the day.  So now I’m down to two night games that I am focusing on:  Stanford at USC and Ohio State at the shoe, hosting the Badgers of Madison.

For the second straight week the Badgers were done in by the long ball, and at 11:13PM CST the Trojans and Cardinal are in their third overtime.  What a game.  A 10-6 Stanford lead at the half turned into the game of the day as Stanford remained undefeated, with a 56-48 triple overtime win over the Men of Troy.
Rudy is next to me right now snoring like a thirty year old and she’s only three, little Ju Ju has been down for the count for about four hours, Richelle is on her patio entertaining, and my goofy ass is wrapping up a long day.

It’s now 11:20PM CST and I’m about to hit the hay.  Get some sleep and get ready to do this all over again in about ten hours.  Not bad for a day off, I’d say!  I got to watch twelve hours of college football, spend some time with my ladies, and rest up for the biggest week I’ve ever been around in covering LSU Football.  So aside from misplacing the remote four times and a little soreness in my belly it’s all good!  How did you spend your Saturday?
