Although the biggest game this weekend takes place on Saturday between the Purple Knights and Raiders, there are some good games on the slate this fine Friday evening. With that said, man I wish the Rummel vs. St. Aug game was tonight. The Raiders beat the Knights 41-20 last year, but we all know that Rummel is good again, and the Knights are a lot better. With that said, let's take a look at some of the key games on tonight's prep football round-up!
L.W. Higgins (0-1) at Covington (1-0)
Last week's results: Higgins lost to O.P. Walker 20-0. Covington defeated Franklinton 35-7. Covington beat Higgins for one of the best wins of the season a year ago with a 26-18 win over the Hurricanes. Higgins is coming off a tough loss to a good OP Walker Team, and the Lions shut down the Franklinton Demons last week with a strong defense that allowed just 76 yards of total offense. This is the game that I will be broadcasting from tonight at the historic Cow Palace on the CHS Campus!
Mandeville (0-1) @ Jewel Sumner (0-1)
This matchup features two teams that need a win. Last week the Skippers fell to 5A Catholic, while Sumner blew a 17-0 lead in a 29-17 loss to 1A power Kentwood. Sumner is led by LSU commitment Jeremy Cutrer.
Karr (1-0) at Destrehan (1-0)
Karr is coming off an impressive 41-13 blowout win over 5A Hahnville, while in the battle of Wildcats Destrehan got the best of St. James, 47-8. Karr narrowly won last season 29-27, but Karr looks even better than they did a season ago. Could Karr be looking ahead to next week's showdown with fellow 4A power Salmen? I know I am! Karr has as much talent and as many Division I-A recruits as any team in the state. Karr's Speedy Noil, a junior, is without question one of the nation's top underclassman.
St. charles (0-1) at Northshore (1-0)
Last week's results : St. Charles lost to Vandebilt 36-33. Northshore defeated Chalmette 36-14. St. Charles lost to a team with a name other than Curtis or Evangel for the first time in a long time last week. The Comets gave up a near 400-yard rushing effort from Terrier QB Ellijah McGuire. The Comets fell to 3rd in the 3A top ten, while the Panthers picked up a nice win last week over 5A Chalmette. This should be a very good game.
