Deke: Saints need to clean up penalites, but lots to like

Way too many penalties! 10 for 104 yards. Coach Sean Payton said that his team has a lot of work to do, and one thing is cleaning up the penalties, right atop of the list.

Saints ran the ball well! As a team, the Black and Gold rushed for 123 yards on 24 carries with an average of 5.1 yards per carry. The Saints rushed the ball for 30 yards on their first three plays of the game.  That was when the ones are on ones.

Mark Ingram did well, and so did K-Rob!  Ingram came out the gate fast, rushing for 30 yards on his first three carries.  Ingram then added 53 more yards on five more carries for a total of 83 yards on 8 carries.  That is an average of 10.4 yards per carry.  Khiry Robinson had 23 yards on five carries for an average of 4.6 yards per rush.

Round one goes to Ryan, not Luke. While Drew Brees is healing up, the battle to see who will be #9’s back up continues. Round one would have to go to Ryan Griffin. McCown got the start, but an interception gave the upper hand to Griffin. Griffin completed 16-of-23 passes for 179 yards, one TD and Griffin finished the game with a QB rating of 107. McCown was 7-of-10 for 49 yards one interception with a rating of 41.2.

Don’t get caught not looking, because he’s already cooking! Rookie WR Brandin Cooks gave the Who Dat Nation a glimpse of what is to come, hauling in a pass from Ryan Griffin - he took it to the house on a 25 yard scamper.  Cooks has it all folks.  I’ll just sit back and let him do his thing!

O-Line gets kudos! Even without OGs Ben Grubbs and Jahri Evans, two of the best in the game, the Saints O-Line, I thought did a pretty good job.  Averaging over five yards per carry is getting it done folks. And the Rams, who have a great front seven and good depth along their D-Line did not get any sacks against the Saints.

The Cajun Cannon’s overall take: “You always want to get off to a fast start. The Rams starters played almost the entire first quarter, and I thought the Saints did well against the Rams front line players.”  Bobby was pleased with the play of the Saints O-Line, he said that TE Josh Hill is a player that Coach Sean Payton likes and Bobby was ok with the play of both QB’s in the Saints 26-24 win over the Rams.

“I know that Shayne Graham has to make those PAT’s.  Yes I know it’s a longer extra point but you can’t miss those kicks.”  Graham missed a PAT in the second quarter of the Saints 26-24 win over the Rams.   In the first two nights of the first full week of the preseason kickers are a combined 23-of-25 on longer PAT’s.  The NFL is placing the ball down at the 15 yard line for longer PAT tries the first two weeks of the 2014 preseason.
