Deke: One highlight from Saints camp is some killer tooth pain

The Saints have their first pre-season game this week, as they hit the road to take on the St. Louis Rams. The third-oldest rival shows up on the exhibition schedule with a very familiar face on the opposite sidelines.

Former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is now in charge of a Rams defense that is already pretty good.Regardless of where you stand with William - and I know his last game with the Black and Gold is one we all have trouble putting behind us (36-33 divsonal loss to 49ers) - Williams was good for the Saints. He molded the Saints defense into a big play unit that forced 39 turnovers and was a huge reason why New Orleans won Super Bowl XLIV. So Coach Williams, thank you for your service, if I ever failed to thank you before!

Hokie and the Hall of Fame
This past weekend, seven players were inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. OL Walter Jones, LB Derrick Brooks, P Ray Guy, WR Andre Reed, DL Claude Humphrey, DL Michael Strahan and DB Aeneas Williams were all enshrined.

Did you know that our very own Hokie Gajan scouted both Michael Strahan and Aeneas Williams when they were in college?  “I can remember seeing Michael when he was at Texas Southern.  You could tell he was a good player,” Gajan said. Hokie began to scout for the Saints back in 1987 when he learned what to do under longtime scout Hamp Cook. Hokie recalled watching Strahan practice at TSU and the team had to run gassers (going across one end of the field to the other) and Strahan was the first down the field every time.  Hokie also told me how he remembered scouting Aeneas Williams.

“A lot of teams were a little concerned about a player that had only played man to man in college.  I felt like Aeneas could play in any scheme, anywhere.”  Williams played at Southern University in Baton Rouge and then had a stellar career in the NFL for the Arizona Cardinals and St. Louis Rams.  For those of you who don’t know yet, Hokie knows football.  A lot of football I’d say!

Get your brush on!
Parents, you most certainly don’t need me to tell your kids how to take care of themselves. But in case you do, brush your teeth young people. Man, when you get a toothache, it is the most painful thing to deal with.  And when it comes to being sick and having aches and pains, let’s just say I’m in dat number on more than two occasions.

I woke up Sunday morning feeling good getting ready to do the show with K-Dog, and then I felt a light throb in the back of my mouth on the right side. I took a few Tylenol and thought nothing of it.

Then just a few hours later my tooth started kicking my you-know-what. Now it’s a full blown abscessed tooth. My people, this pain is about as bad as it gets.  Cal (My father) got some meds from my wonderful pharmacist (Gerald Ahhdeena Giardina) and put them in an overnight package to me. So the lesson here to all of you out there is that if you take care of your teeth, you would not have to have your father overnight you toothache medicine while you’re at training camp.

I hope all of you are doing well back home.  Won’t be long now!  Til tomorrow, Who Dat!
