Big Chief: Prep Football - Week #10: The Regular Season Comes to an End

It’s come down to this. The regular season is coming to an end, and next week we’ll embark on an historic playoff season…many of us don’t know what to expect. Until then, there are several district titles on the line this week as well as playoff positioning.
I have the pleasure of broadcasting WWL Prep Football Roundup live from the Wildcats battle between East St. John and Destrehan. After starting the season a disappointing 0-3, Coach Phil Banko and his ESJ Wildcats won six straight games and can win the district 7-5A Title with a win over Destrehan.
“I’m very proud of the way the entire team has responded. The coaches and players all stuck together and have worked hard to put us in this situation,” Banko told me earlier this week. The Wildcats are currently #15 in the 5A Class power ratings and are currently in position to host a first round playoff game.
On the flip side, the Destrehan Wildcats are the real deal. The Wildcats are led by their senior QB Donovan Isom. Isom is approaching the 2,000 yard passing mark. But, what’s most impressive--his TD to interception ratio. Isom has thrown 25 TD’s this season and just one interception. And, his lone interception came by way of a tipped ball. The Wildcats of DHS are #5 in the Class 5A power ratings.
Another huge game--the Edna Karr Cougars take on the Eagles of Warren Easton.
Karr can win yet another district 9-4A title with a win over Warren Easton. The high flying Eagles offense was grounded somewhat last week, when WE suffered their first loss of the season in a 13-12 setback to the Charging Bucs of Landry Walker.
The New Orleans Metro Area has dominated 4A this season, and currently six of the top 10 teams in the Class 4A power ratings are from Greater New Orleans. Karr is #2 behind only Neville. Landry Walker is #3, Easton is #4, East Jefferson #5, Franklinton #7 and Belle Chase #9. Man, the 4A playoffs are going to be off the chain!
The West Bank game of the week pits the West Jeff Bucs against rival John Ehret. Ehret is currently seeded #23; West Jeff is #26.
And, the 6-5 Title is on the line as Covington battles Mandeville. The Lions are currently #13, while the Skippers are #12.
Folks, the weather should be great and the games are going to be awesome. Get out and have fun! There’s nothing like high school football!
