As training camp at the Advocare Facility in West Virginia comes to an end, the New Orleans Saints practiced this morning for a little less than two hours. "Today was the hottest it has been," said the Cajun Cannon Bobby Hebert.
The Saints practiced on the lower field, which is a turf surface. After a walk-though, the Saints went live for an eight-play drill with the offense going against the defense.
"Coach Payton wanted to see how the team responded after having a flat practice on Monday," Bobby said. The Saints defense set the tone with two good plays on the first snaps, but the offense closed out the drill with several good gains.
"I would say of the eight plays, the defense won four times and the offense won four." DB Corey White made a nice play, batting a pass down. QB Luke McCown was trying to hit WR Joe Morgan but White came in and batted the ball away.
"Corey White is having a very good camp. He has been consistent and done well the last two weeks at practice," Hebert said. After the eight live plays the Saints then worked on team offense against team defense.
QB Luke McCown hit TE Jimmy Graham for about a 15 yard gain. McCown would then hit rookie WR Brandin Cooks for a 20 yard gain later in the team drill. Bobby's notes also had QB Ryan Griffin connecting with WR Nick Toon for a TD, beating out rookie DB Stanley Jean Baptiste for a score.
Hebert said that Saints safety Kenny Vaccaro broke up a pass on TE Jimmy Graham, and WR Joe Morgan was active at this mornings practice with a couple of nice grabs to his credit.
The Saints defense also picked up some sacks today: "This was the most sacks the defense had in one practice - I counted seven take downs by the defense," Bobby said. LB Parys Haralson had a sack on QB Luke McCown, and DE Cam Jordan took down McCown while DB Corey White recorded a sack coming off a blitz. DB Marcus Ball and DL Brandon Deaderick both had sacks this morning.
Overall, the Cajun Cannon was pleased with what he saw today from the Black and Gold. "It was a much more lively practice and more crisp than on Monday." The play of the day came when fourth team QB Logan Kilgore hit WR Seantavious Jones on a long 55 yard TD.
